A mysterious are pair featured in this 1/6 plate tintype that comes in a 1/2 case. The shorter soldier on the left
has a "3", a "K" and some other emblem on his knit cap with a tassel. I thought it might be an engineer's castle
device, but I just can't tell for sure. He wears a light colored shell jacket with shoulder tabs with dark corporal's
chevrons. He has a small style US (reversed) belt plate and what appears to be an 1849 Colt pocket pistol tucked under
his belt. The tall soldier on the right has the same knit cap with tassel, but the device on the face of the cap looks
like it might be an embroidered eagle or some other icon. It does not appear to be a number. The tall guy wears a frock
coat and a belt with a Militia Panel Plate, ca 1850 - 1865 as seen in O'Donnell & Campbell's book "American Military Belt
Plates"; page 256 Plate #403. Of keen interest is the James Warner Pocket Model Revolver tucked under his belt. A special
thanks to Dan Binder who helped I.D. the pistol. The tintype has no bends, but suffers from being dark. The emulsion is solid
and stable. I think that the American flag in the background is an actual flag rather than a painted backdrop. #9764=$450.00
