This soldier wears a distinctive shell jacket with a faux lining built into the jacket. I've seen this same jacket on 11th
Indiana and 34th Indiana. Typically the 34th has a clover leaf embroidered into the breast of the jacket and there is no
clover leaf here. The cuffs are of the same "inner" light colored material. The jacket is open and you can see his check
shirt and suspenders. He wears a western style hat and stares intently at the photographer. This 1/6 plate tintype comes
in a full case that has been repaired at the seam. There is writing in the back of the image. It is tough to read, but here
is what I can make out: "Farewell at last by the time the star ___ ___ ___ forget me never. Although we are at ___ ___ ___.
Remember me for I am ______ I pray forget me never although far far away. Written to William Z Timmer. ____ his __ M.M.D.
I looked at the 11th Indiana and there are 3 possible soldiers with the initials M.D. Further research might just I.D. this soldier.
Also, there is a raised area in the emulsion that can be seen in the scan. It might even be a hair that was on the surface of the
image when the emulsion was applied. The emulsion is totally stable and suffers from being darker than I would like. #6014=$345.00
