The ink I.D. in the case reads "Henry J. Fox". The verbal I.D. associates this with the 5th New Jersey Inf. Records indicate that Fox enlisted on 8/29/1861 as a Corporal. He was then discharged for disability on 11/20/1862at Fort McHenry, Baltimore, MD. There is no record of his promotion to 1st sergeant which this image clearly shows. He wears a 9 button frock coat with blue tinted chevrons and lozenge. He has a US belt plate and red tinted Officer-of-the-Day sash. The scabbard for the NCO sword, which he holds, is tucked under his belt leading to speculation that the sword is a studio prop. The 5th NJ saw significant action throughout the war to include Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Gaines Farm, Malvern Hill and 2nd Bull Run during Fox's short stint of service. The 1/4 plate tintype comes in a full leatherette case. #4398=$750.00
